Number of Car Commuters Now Using Active Modes

The number of car commuters switching to active modes of transportation is a measurable indicator that gives insight into commuters’ frequency of making use of carpooling, taking public transit, biking, or walking. If fewer commuters use their personal vehicles to reach their destinations, it suggests that they prefer walking and cycling, which will enhance their physical activity.1

This indicator helps determine the effectiveness of the following objectives

Data Collection

Data on the number of commuters using active transportation can be collected by counting people on bikes or the number of pedestrians crossing busy intersections. However, the most accurate way to collect this data is through surveys. Surveys can be conducted online, in person, or by mail. When conducting a survey, it is important to ask questions that will provide accurate and reliable data. For example, questions about why people choose to commute by active transportation or how often they do so can help to provide valuable insights. Additionally, surveys can be conducted at different times of the year to collect data on seasonal trends.2

One major aim this organization prioritizes is to ensure the number of car commuters and drive-alone commuter trips is reduced. Additionally, they aim to improve access to public transit and mobility through downtown Seattle.
